Man sleeping in a Hillcrest alley run over, trapped under vehicle

A 65-year-old man who was sleeping in an alley in Hillcrest suffered serious injuries Sunday when he was run over and trapped under a vehicle, police said.

San Diego police said the man was lying on a mattress at about 11:30 a.m. in an alley off Park Boulevard near University Avenue when a driver traveling east on University turned right into the alley and struck him.

The man was dragged about 30 feet before the 48-year-old driver realized what was happening and stopped, according to authorities. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived and used several pieces of equipment to carefully lift the compact SUV to get the man out.

Police said the man suffered second- and third-degree burns on the left side of his body and a fractured femur. He was taken to the hospital. His injuries are not considered life threatening. His name was not released.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief John Fisher told OnSceneTV that the man was sleeping in a place where he couldn't be seen by the driver.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the collision. Anyone with information is encouraged to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
