Man slashed and three shootings in shocking week of violence across Merseyside

People across Merseyside were left shocked and scared by one slashing and three shootings in the space of a few days.

One man was rushed to hospital with a slash wound to the arm while communities were shocked and scared after shootings in Birkenhead, Wavertree and Kirkby. Police were called to Springvale Close on Monday, June 6 at around 10.50pm following reports of shots being fired at a home.

It is believed that the suspect, or suspects, drove away from the scene in the direction of Dagnall Road, after the shooting. Officers confirmed that no reports of injuries have been made in connection to the shooting.

Detective chief inspector Rachel Wilson said: "We are in the very early stages of this investigation. We are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with any information. We understand the fear that gun crime causes and I’d like to reassure the community that we think this was a targeted attack, one which we’re thoroughly investigating.

"Firearms have no place on the streets of Merseyside and we remain committed to removing them and the people who choose to carry them. It is absolutely vital that we get all information from those communities who feel the impact of gun crime, so we can bring those responsible to justice."

The next day police rushed to Mill Lane's junction with Deverell Road in Wavertree just after 6.10pm. It followed a report four men in dark clothing and with their faces covered were chasing one another on a bike and scooter when a shot was fired.

A short time later, at around 7.10pm, officers were called to a property on Mill Lane where they found damage to the window of a house consistent with a shot being fired. Officers continue to appeal for information as Detective Inspector Cat Walsh said: "We are making good progress in this investigation, and have made an arrest, but we continue to urge anyone who was in the area after 6pm on Tuesday and may have witnessed anything suspicious at all to come forward.

"We are also appealing to anyone who has CCTV, dashcam or footage on any other devices to take the time to check them to see if they have captured footage that could help us find those responsible. It is completely reckless to fire a gun in a residential street such as this, and we are fortunate that no-one was hurt."

On Wednesday, June 8, Police were called to Arrowe Park Pub, in Woodchurch, after reports three men had run into the pub to take cover. The men are alleged to have shouted that shots had been fire at them from a car.

A separate cordon further down Church Lane, just behind the shops was also put in place. Customers who were leaving the pub at around 9pm told the ECHO people "ran inside and said they had been shot at."

There are no reports of anyone being injured. It is not yet clear whether all three of the shootings are linked, however, police have said they believe the shootings are targeted.

On Thursday, June 9 Merseyside Police rushed to The Whistle Stop Café on Picton Road, Wavertree, at around 1.55pm on Thursday, June 9, following reports of an assault. Once at the scene officers found a man was slashed inside the café, and asked the ambulance service to attend.

The man suffered slash injuries to his arm and was rushed to hospital by ambulance. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Merseyside Police believe the attacker, a man, left the scene in a dark coloured vehicle. Eyewitnesses who work on Picton Road said it was "pandemonium" on the busy street after the incident happened, with armed police, officers and paramedics all responding to the incident.

One shop worker said she heard "plates smash" at around 2pm and when she went to see what was happened saw people outside the café.
