A Sydney man has been shot dead while sitting in his car in a quiet suburban street on Sydney's outskirts.

The man was found with gunshot wounds inside the car on Hertfordshire Street in the southwest suburb of Elizabeth Hills about 4pm, police said.

"Despite the efforts of first responders, the man died at the scene," police said.

He has not been formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 20s.

A crime scene has been established in the street.

The incident coincided with the discovery of a burnout car in a nearby suburb, the Daily Telegraph reported.
