A man has been shot dead in the New South Wales Hunter region.
Police and paramedics were called to a Fowler Street home in the Newcastle suburb of Hamilton South about 11pm yesterday, where they found a 57-year-old man with gunshot wounds.
He died at the home and a crime scene has been established.
Police said the man was shot in the chest at his front door and another resident who was at the unit called triple 0.
Newcastle City Police District commander Superintendent Tracy Chapman said there were a large number of police in the area talking to residents and searching the area.
Superintendent Chapman said police believed the shooting was a targeted incident, not random.
But she called on the public for their help.
"Police are still making enquiries as to the path the offender took when he left the scene," she said.
"In terms of public assistance, I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Fowler Street, Hamilton South, last night between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.
"Anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV footage, or anyone who saw or heard anything, to contact Crime Stoppers."
Superintendent Chapman said police had a number of leads and wouldn't release the man's name.
A neighbour, who did not want to give his name, said he did not know there had been a shooting until this morning.
"I didn't hear anything till I woke up about 5 when I looked out my kitchen window and saw a police vehicle in the driveway," he said.
He said the man had "only been around a few months" and that he had seen him working on cars.
"Not a bloke I'd go up to and say g'day to or anything."
