Sheriff's deputies in central Mississippi were involved in a fatal shooting incident that occurred in the town of Florence, Rankin County. The state Department of Public Safety confirmed that the deputies shot and killed a man who had fired a gun toward them.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. on Sunday when deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting a person threatening family members at a residence. Upon arrival, the man discharged his weapon at the deputies, prompting them to return fire in self-defense.
Following the exchange of gunfire, the man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Fortunately, none of the deputies involved sustained any injuries during the altercation.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, as is standard procedure for incidents involving law enforcement shootings. The Bureau will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and will subsequently present its findings to the state Attorney General’s Office.
If any legal violations are uncovered during the investigation, the Attorney General’s Office retains the authority to pursue further action as deemed necessary.
