In a shocking turn of events at a murder trial in Brazil, a man took matters into his own hands by interrupting court proceedings to shoot the suspect accused of killing his father. The incident occurred in São José do Belmonte, where Cristiano Alves Terto, 27, unleashed a hail of bullets at Franscico Cleidivaldo Mariano de Moura, 38, inside the courtroom.
The CCTV footage captured the chaos as judges and jury members scrambled for cover during the violent outburst. It remains a mystery how Terto managed to enter the courtroom armed with a .38-caliber revolver. The attack took place on November 29, 2023, but the video footage was only released by the police on April 1, 2024.
Terto relentlessly pursued Moura across the courtroom, not only firing shots but also physically assaulting the defendant. Law enforcement officers present at the scene intervened, chasing Terto out of the room and subsequently arresting him on suspicion of attempted murder.
Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Moura survived the attack and was rushed to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. He was later transferred to a larger medical facility for further treatment and has since been discharged, as reported by Jam Press.
The tragic chain of events stemmed from Moura's confession that he had fatally shot Francisco Alves on October 5, 2012. Moura claimed that he encountered Alves while searching for a stray donkey and was met with hostility, leading to a confrontation where he felt compelled to defend himself.
Following the fatal shooting, Moura evaded authorities for over a decade before being apprehended in Salguiero, a city in northern Brazil. However, no retrial date has been scheduled for Moura since his discharge from the hospital, while Terto has remained in custody since the day of the courtroom attack.
The Pernambuco Court of Justice confirmed that the jury has not reconvened, and a new trial date has yet to be determined, leaving the legal proceedings in limbo.
