Toast is one of the nation's favourite breakfasts as many of us enjoy it everyday with some butter and jam or marmalade.
But something that might get overlooked in many households is the cleanliness of the toaster and if it is not as well maintained as it should be, then it is not going to last as long.
One cleaning expert from cooking appliance retailer Morphy Richards has shared why it is so important to clean out your toaster and suggested the best way of doing this.
And they revealed the most important part of the toaster to clean is hidden right at the bottom of the appliance.
Lots of us might not even realise our toasters have crumb trays at the bottom. These are there to catch collect loose crumbs which fall from the bread.
Christian Strandoo, product manager at Morphy Richards, told The Express: "The crumb tray sits underneath your toaster and catches errant crumbs so that they don’t build up inside the toaster slots.
"If you’ve never noticed it before, the crumb tray compartment can usually be opened from the back of the toaster and it will slide out from underneath."
They are crucial parts of the toaster but leaving them un-cleaned can make them hazards for burning and smoking.
And the expert has stated that these should be cleaned at least once a week.
To make sure this is cleaned you can simply remove the crumb tray from the bottom of the toaster, empty the crumbs into the bin then get a damp paper towel or cloth and wipe away any remaining crumbs before popping it back in.
Christian shared that one of the key reasons for this is safety as you do not want to have crumbs burning or smoking in the toaster.
But he added: "Cleaning the crumb tray regularly will increase the lifespan of the product – which of course will be cost-saving and more sustainable over time."
