A man was seriously injured in a late night disturbance at a flat in Dumfries.
The 29-year-old was taken to Dumfries Infirmary and later transferred to hospital in Edinburgh.
A second man, aged 35, was also hurt in the incident and he was treated at DGRI.
Police found the injured men after being alerted to a disturbance at a block of flats in Church Street just after midnight on Wednesday.
Officers investigating the incident are appealing for witnesses.
Detective Inspector Graeme Robertson said: “We believe there were other people in the flat around the time of the disturbance.
“I am appealing to them to contact us as they could have vital information which could assist our enquiries.”
He added: “I would also like to ask local residents who may have heard a disturbance or who may have seen something suspicious to get in touch with us. It’s imperative we establish exactly what has happened here.”
The area around the flats was cordoned off by police tape until late on Wednesday night.
And cops carried out door-to-door enquiries and have been checking CCTV footage of the surrounding area.
Anyone with information is asked to call Police Scotland via 101.
