Man 'seriously' injured after late-night attack outside pub

A man is in a "serious" condition in hospital after an attack outside a pub last night.

At 10.30pm yesterday Merseyside Police received a report that a man was assaulted outside Champs on Liverpool Road in Ainsdale. The victim, a man in his 30s, has been taken to hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.

The cordon was still in place at 8am this morning when the ECHO visited the area and neighbours said they were "shocked" to be confronted with the police scene.

Steve, who works at Brough Butchers on Liverpool Road said: "Well, I was just coming to work this morning at around 5am. It was pitch black and as I got closer I saw the cordon in place so I had to walk around to get into the shop. I was pretty shocked by it, I mean it was news to me, I did not know it was there."

An investigation is underway and witness and CCTV enquiries are ongoing in the local area. A cordon is currently in place on Liverpool Road and Station Road whilst officers continue their enquiries.

At the Co-Op on Station Road, one employee said that he had come in to work early on Saturday morning and had "no idea" what was going on.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that officers are on Liverpool Road in Southport after a man was attacked in the area last night (Friday 24 February). Just after 10.30pm, we received a report that a man was assaulted by another man outside a bar on Liverpool Road.

"The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition. An investigation is underway and witness and CCTV enquiries are ongoing in the local area. A cordon is currently in place on Liverpool Road and Station Road whilst officers continue their enquiries.
