Man seriously injured after being sprayed with substance during 'unprovoked' attack

A man was seriously injured after being 'sprayed with a substance' during an 'unprovoked' attack in Wigan. The victim, a man in his 40s, was walking home when he was assaulted by a group of four men in Wigan Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, at about 12.45pm last Monday (June 13).

During the assault, which happened near to Bryn Railway Station, one of the culprits sprayed the victim with a substance – leaving him with serious facial and upper body injuries. The victim was taken to hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.

Detectives are now appealing for information about the attack. The culprits are described as being white, in their late teens or early twenties. They were wearing dark coloured sportswear while one man was wearing a distinctive thunderbolt design t-shirt.

DC Will Lloyd, of GMP Wigan’s CID, said: “Our investigation has led us to believe that this was a completely unprovoked assault. We will not tolerate the use of this level of violence in our communities which is why it is so important we bring those responsible to face justice.

“Anyone with information or images/ footage which show a group of males matching this description in the area at the time should share it with us directly or via Crimestoppers.”

GMP Wigan CID can be contacted via 0161 856 7094 quoting 129 13/06/22. Crimestoppers can be contacted, anonymously, via 0800 555 111.
