Man says 'I didn't do it' as he is charged with punching garda at Garth Brooks concert

A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a garda during a Garth Brooks concert.

Gary Doyle, 27, appeared before Dublin’s District Court this morning charged with assaulting a garda causing harm in Croke Park, Dublin on Saturday, September 10. The court heard that the injured party suffered a broken nose during the alleged assault.

Mr Doyle, with an address in Co Down, is accused of a Section 3 assault causing harm against a member of An Garda Siochana at the famous venue. Superstar Brooks, 60, was performing in front of 80,000 adoring fans at the Dublin headquarters of the GAA when the alleged incident occurred.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Sergeant Elaine Murtagh of Mountjoy Garda Station said that the accused was arrested at 10.05pm at Croke Park, Dublin 3. When charged she said the accused stated: “I didn’t do it.”

A solicitor for Mr Doyle told the court that his client was maintaining his innocence. He said his client was the “designated driver” and had come down for the concert and was “sober at all times.”

The solicitor said his client was “confident” that CCTV footage from the time of the alleged incident will show that “he wasn’t the assailant.” Sergeant Murtagh said there was no objection to bail.

The court heard the accused was ready to make a cash lodgement of €1,000. His solicitor stated that his client was “never in any difficulty before.”

The court heard that a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The presiding judge then asked what was the nature of the injury against the injured party, to which Sergeant Murtagh said: “A broken nose.”

The injured party had attended A&E and a decision will have to me made regarding whether they need surgery at a future date, the court heard. The presiding judge granted bail on condition that the accused lodge a cash payment of €1,000.

He must provide a mobile phone number to gardai and must carry that phone at all times and be available to answer it. The accused is also required to provide an up to date address to gardai.

Mr Doyle was remanded on bail subject to those terms. He is due to appear again before the court on October 10.
