A man living near Cardiff's ongoing Tudor Street roadworks has shared a video of noisy construction work keeping him awake at 3am. The man, who prefers not to be named, said the work was causing an "absolute racket" and leaving him "exhausted."
Works on the busy road in Cardiff have been ongoing for over a year, in which the road has been one-way to accommodate a multi-million-pound regeneration project including new shop fronts, wider pavements, new street lights, car parking, a cycle lane and a drainage system. The road is set to re-open in early October.
The resident filmed two videos - one at 3am early on Thursday morning, and another just after 1am on Friday morning. They show work going on right outside his window, including vehicles going past and loud construction equipment being used.
He told WalesOnline: "It’s having a great impact, I'm feeling absolutely exhausted from the lack of sleep, and thus it's causing stress. I’ve been here since January and the work has been ongoing since. It’s been every night for the last few weeks.
"They go from about 2am until the morning shift starts at 8am. I’m all for them trying to finish the work, but not at a time when all the residents are trying to sleep."
He said the work wakes him and his partner up and prevents them from getting back to sleep. The work is permitted to be taken out between 7pm and 5pm, according to the council.
The resident opened up, saying: "It’s getting to the point where it’s almost depressing. It’s made me feel so tired and exhausted, they didn’t stop till almost 4am last night. I just want to sleep now."
A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: "All residents and businesses were written to on September 16 informing them of the up-and-coming work to the highway on Tudor Street. As well as working during the day, the contractor is permitted to work between 7pm and 5am from Monday to Thursday and between 7pm and 5am on a Sunday. Both videos shown in this article are during the permitted hours.
"Night-time working isn’t ideal and is only carried out by the contractor when there is a need, as often this work cannot be carried out during the daytime. The council would like to thank residents for their patience while this takes place and apologises for any inconvenience caused."
Knights Brown, the construction company responsible for the work, has been contacted for comment.
