A man's body has been discovered near the wreckage of a car on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales after a crash that is believed to have happened days ago.
The wreckage was discovered down an embankment on the Pacific Highway at Bonville, approximately 10 kilometres south of Coffs Harbour, on Monday night.
Police said initial inquiries suggested the crash may have occurred on Friday, November 25.
The man is yet to be identified and is believed to be 26 years old.
"We believe the vehicle was in the southbound lane, has crossed the median strip and has gone into the bush on the northbound lanes and impacted with a culvert, a drainage area," said Coffs-Clarence Police District Acting Superintendent Guy Flaherty.
The man's body was found outside an Audi A4, Acting Superintendent Flahetry said.
He was believed to be the sole occupant of the car and died after the initial collision.
"The male appears to have left the car and then has succumbed to the injuries as a result of that specific impact," Acting Superintendent Flahetry said.
"From initial signs, he's been able to open the door to his car and then he's died from injuries impacted from the significant crash into a concrete storm water drain."
Truck driver alerts authorities
A truck driver alerted emergency services to a separate incident nearby, before spotting the man's wrecked vehicle down an embankment on the opposite side of the road, Acting Superintendent Flahetry said.
"From his position and height he was able to see this vehicle some metres off the roadway into the bush," he said.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation has commenced into the circumstances of the accident.
Anyone who has information has been asked to contact police.
"We are appealing for anyone who was on the motorway southbound from the Coffs area, anytime between 5:15pm on Friday that may have seen a black Audi driving at speed," Mr Flaherty said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
