Man's body found in the River Leven near Renton after four day search

A man’s body was found in the River Leven near Renton this afternoon, after a four day search.

Rescue teams launched an operation last Saturday (December 17) evening following reports that a man had been spotted in the Leven in Renton.

Coastguard rescue teams based in Helensburgh and Greenock were joined by the coastguard’s rescue helicopter and a lifeboat from the Royal Navy’s Faslane base in scouring the freezing river on Saturday night.

An eyewitness told us: “There were a huge amount of teams involved. We had the coastguard, a police boat, two coast guard dinghy boats, police, ambulance and fire trucks.”

She added that a helicopter could be seen following the Leven from Dumbarton to Renton on Sunday morning for several hours.

Search operations continued over the weekend, before the announcement today (Tuesday December 20) that a body had been found.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Around 8pm on Saturday, 17 December, 2022, police received a report of a man in the River Leven near Burns Street, Renton. Following searches carried out today, officers from Police Scotland Marine and Dive Unit have recovered a man’s body.

“A formal identification has still to be carried out and the man’s family has been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “Police Scotland led on the operation and we helped with the search for a missing man.

“Coastguard rescue teams from Helensburgh and Greenock responded, along with the HM Coastguard helicopter based at Prestwick and a lifeboat from Faslane, to carry out a thorough search.”
