Two lanes were closed off last night while emergency services worked at the scene. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 7.50pm, fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M56 motorway between junctions 3 and 4.

"Three fire engines from Wythenshawe and Stockport stations, as well as the technical response unit from Ashton, quickly attended the incident, which involved two cars. Firefighters used specialist equipment to extricate a man from one of the cars.

"He was transferred to the care of colleagues from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and taken to hospital. Fire crews helped make the area safe before handing the scene over to Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and 20 minutes."
