Man rushed to hospital after Peterhead supply base explosion involving chemicals

A man has been rushed to hospital after a huge explosion ripped through a supply base in Peterhead. Emergency services rushed to the Asco facility at Harbourside in the town at around 11am on Wednesday, June 21.

The condition of the man who was taken to hospital is currently unknown. Medics also treated a number of people at the scene for minor injuries.

Officers remain at the scene after the supply base which is the world's biggest private offshore support facility was evacuated amid concerns about the safety of the site's structures following the blast.

Police also confirmed chemicals were involved in the incident but stressed there is no risk to the wider community.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 11am on Wednesday, 21 June, 2023, we were called to a report of an explosion at an industrial premises in the Burnhaven area of Peterhead.

"Emergency services attended and the premises was evacuated as a precaution. A number of people were treated for their injuries at the scene with one man being taken to hospital for treatment.

"Officers will remain at the premises until structures have been assessed and declared safe. The Health and Safety Executive has been advised.

"Although chemicals were involved in the incident, there is no risk to the wider community and decontamination procedures are in place for those present."
