Emergency services have rescued a man hiking the Larapinta Trail by helicopter after he activated an emergency locator beacon on Saturday afternoon.
The man, 60, became ill and activated his personal locator beacon at 4:40pm on Saturday, NT Police said.
NT Police said a search and rescue operation was established around a remote location on the Larapinta Trail west of Standley Chasm.
Personnel from NT Police, NT Emergency Service and St John NT reached the man shortly after 9:30pm on Saturday evening, police said.
Police and paramedics stayed with the man overnight while a helicopter was chartered for a rescue at first light.
He was then airlifted to Standley Chasm where a waiting ambulance transported him to Alice Springs Hospital.
“The hiker had a personal locator beacon which he activated when he realised he was in trouble," NT Police Senior Sergeant Michael Potts said.
"This probably saved his life."
“A number of hikers have suffered from heat stress recently and it is incredibly important that anyone heading out bush takes proper precautions, stays hydrated and is prepared for the unexpected.”
Earlier this month a 22-year-old man died on the Larapinta Trail after he collapsed between Standley Chasm and Simpsons Gap.
In the same week emergency services were also called to assist two separate groups suffering from dehydration and heat stress.
