Man rescued from roof of house by firefighters after blaze breaks out

A man was rescued from the roof of a house in Salford after a fire broke out.

The blaze broke out in a house on Liverpool Road in Irlam at around 9.20am this morning (Friday). Fire crews, police officers and paramedics were called to the scene.

A man who was in the loft at the time the fire started escaped onto the roof, a police spokesperson said. He was rescued by firefighters.

The man was then checked over by paramedics. The road was cordoned off as fire crews extinguished the blaze.

Crews, including the fire service incident commander, were pictured carrying out investigations inside the property after it had been put out. The cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police received a call at 9.20am this morning, Friday 17 February 2023, to persons reported in a fire on Liverpool Road, Irlam. Colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) put the small blaze out and made the property safe.

"A man, who was believed to be in the loft when the fire started, escaped to the roof and was rescued by the fire service, before he was checked over by NWAS."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 9am this morning (Friday 17th February), three fire engines from Irlam, Eccles and Stretford fire station were called to reports of a building fire involving flats on Liverpool Road, Irlam.

“Crews arrived quickly at scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses used a hose reel to extinguish the fire. Firefighter rescued one person from the roof of the building who was then treated at the scene by North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and thirty minutes.”
