Man released after 'foul play not suspected' following discovery of body in Cavan

A man has been released after a post-mortem showed no signs of 'foul play' in relation to the discovery of a body in County Cavan.

A man in his 30s was previously arrested on Thursday in connection with the murder of Dennis Neary, 52, from Blacklion, in Cavan.

He was released from custody on Friday and gardai said he is no longer suspected of any criminality in this incident.

In a statement on Thursday night, a garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating a fatal assault on a man that occurred in County Cavan on the morning of Thursday 9th March 2023.

"At approximately 9.15am, Gardaí received reports of a man discovered unresponsive with serious injuries at a domestic residence in Blacklion, County Cavan."

They added that despite medical intervention, the man in his 50s, Dennis Neary, had died.

However, in an update on Friday evening, gardaí confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been completed in this case, adding that they do not comment on the specific results of post mortem examinations for "operational reasons."

"However, as a result of preliminary results provided to An Garda Síochána, foul play is no longer suspected in this incident," a spokesperson said.

They added: "The male in his 30s who was detained at Castlerea Garda Station has been released from that detention and is no longer suspected of any criminality in this incident.

"An Garda Síochána continue to investigate this matter for the preparation of a coroner inquest file only."
