A man has been refused bail over his alleged involvement in an underworld murder conspiracy almost three years ago.
An attempt to assassinate Ibrahem Hamze in August 2021 was a part of an ongoing conflict between Sydney organised crime networks, police have said.
Hamze's older brother Bilal was gunned down as he left a restaurant in the city centre in June that year.
The plan to kill Ibrahem Hamze was interrupted when police tried to stop a stolen Mercedes at North Sydney, which sped off and was abandoned nearby before two armed men allegedly carjacked another vehicle.
But police allege the conspiracy continued, charging a man they say carried out further surveillance in an attempt to locate the target in October and November 2021.
The 24-year-old accused faced Parramatta Local Court on Friday, charged with conspiracy to murder and participating in a criminal group.
He was formally refused bail and the case returns to court in September, after he was arrested at a correctional facility on Thursday.
Others have also been charged over the conspiracy and remain before the courts.
Police strike force Newnham was established in November 2019 to target organise crime syndicates and has arrested more than 20 people, laying 90 charges and seizing firearms, jewellery, drugs, cash and high-performance vehicles.
