A NSW man has been arrested while allegedly attempting to leave the country with child exploitation material.

The 82-year-old from the Hunter Valley was charged with attempting to export child abuse material after Australian Border Force officers discovered the images as he was about to board a flight to Denmark.

Officers searching the man's phone uncovered the explicit images in a WhatsApp chat.

Border Force Acting Commander Raef McDonaugh warned authorities had no tolerance for anyone who possesses "vile" child abuse material.

"It is not a victimless crime," Acting Commander McDonough said on Friday.

"Not only is child abuse material illegal, there are very real child victims who have been subject to abuse and harm in creating abhorrent images."

The man faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted.

He was granted bail subject to strict conditions including surrendering his passport and reporting weekly to NSW police.

He is also prohibited from approaching schools or being in the company of minors.
