Man makes over 100 calls to South Mumbai family in extortion bid; abuses, threatens staff

MUMBAI: The Gamdevi police on Saturday arrested a 49-year-old man from Saki Naka for allegedly calling up a Peddar Road family more than 100 times, abusing the family's personal manager, outraging the modesty of a female employee and threatening to kill her.

He also demanded them to pay him Rs 10,000. The accused was earlier in 2017 arrested for a theft at actress Karisma Kapoor's residence. So far, 20 criminal cases have been registered against him.

The accused, Imtiyaz Ansari, a school dropout, had also earlier targeted a doctor in Gamdevi area in bid to extort him. The accused is married and has two children. However, due to his criminal activities, his family does not live with him.

The 32-year-old woman employee stated in her complaint that between August 24 and September 14, the accused, who had introduced himself as a carpenter, first called up her employer's landline, and inquired if there was any repair work for him to carry out.

"He was told there was no such work," said police. Then, he began calling up the family's residence and used abusive language, issued threats and demanded extortion money from them," said a police officer. He had called up on the complainant's mobile phone too and threatened to kill her, said the police.

A team led by zonal DCP Neelotpal and monitored by senior inspector Dattaram Girap and PSI Dhanesh Satardekarbegan the probe. Investigators collected the call data records and SDR of Ansari's number but most of the time his phone was either on flight mode or the call was diverted. Cops finally used informers to track him down to a SakiNaka slum.

Police said that the accused would pretend to be a contractor, get the landline numbers of residents from Nepean Sea Road, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road, Bhulabhai Desai Road, Altamount Road in south Mumbai, Juhu and Bandra as well and call them up.
