A man has been forced to live in a Travelodge after a sinkhole opened up under his home during a series of storms. On February 27, Simon Sugden was woken in the early hours of the morning by firefighters who were evacuating residents of Westlea Avenue, West Yorkshire.
Flood water had caused a landslide which eroded the gardens and left them unstable. Bradford City Council has told Simon it is not safe for him to return home. He has spent the past five days living in a Travelodge and has been told by home insurers he can stay there for another two weeks, reports Yorkshire Live.
"It's been a nightmare. The last few days have been like living in a disaster movie. I don't know whether I'm coming or going."
Simon's daughter has gone to stay with her mum but will visit him in the budget hotel this weekend. The house has sentimental value as well. Simon's father's ashes are buried in the garden.
He said: "It's obviously not safe to go digging around there at the moment. It's heart-breaking. I've also got lots of furniture and all my personal belongings in there that I can't get to."
