Man left feeling 'powerless' after hit and run leaves him with severe headaches

A man claims he 'could have been killed' after a hit and run on a "dangerous road."

Adam Williams said he was hit by a moving car as he was bent to inspect another parked car on Wargrave Road at around 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

He said the car was "driving fast" down the Newton-le-Willows road before it hit his head with the wing mirror on the 30mph road.

The 40-year-old, who fell to the floor in agony, said the sound of the impact was "gut-wrenching".

He told the ECHO : "We were returning home from a day out shopping and were parked outside our house. I was looking at the neighbour's car because I'd bumped it accidently and was inspecting it for any damage.

"As I was bent down a car came flying down the road and hit me with its wing mirror, it knocked me down but the driver didn't stop, they just carried on.

"I was taken to Whiston A&E and was rushed in for an emergency brain scan. Luckily there was no bleed and I was discharged with concussion and strong painkillers."

As a result of the accident, Adam said he has been left with severe headaches, double vision, nausea and has had to stop working as a self employed advanced nurse practitioner.

He said: "The consultant was amazed there was no severe damage. They told me if I was 2cm higher I would have felt the full force.

"If I had been half an inch closer to the car I would likely have been killed or severely injured as it was driving at least 30mph.

"It's massively affected me. There was something on the TV that night in the background and a car exploded and I jumped off the sofa. I'm worried about going out and I've not driven since.

"Imagine if it had been a child, there's no way the driver didn't know they had hit someone or something.

"They'd have looked in the wing mirror and saw me fall to the floor, they couldn't have missed the sound of impact. It was horrendous, it makes me feel physically sick.

"It was lucky I didn't fall into oncoming traffic. I could have been seriously injured or killed."

Adam said that road is "dangerous" as despite cars being parked on one side, some motorists don't slow down to check for hazards.

He told the ECHO his own car has been damaged before in the past by speeding traffic.

Adam has since reported the matter to police, but without a registration number he said there is not much they can do, but said the car looked like a Volkswagen Passat Estate B7 model.

Adam added he feels "powerless" and his mental health is "shot" after thinking he was "going to die from a head injury".

Adam and Merseyside Police are urging people with any information to come forward.

A spokesperson from police said: "We were called to a report of a collision on Wargrave Road involving a male pedestrian and a black Volkswagen Passat at around 7.50pm on Wednesday, January 29.

"The driver failed to stop at the scene and an investigation is underway. The man sustained minor injuries to his head and received hospital treatment.

"Officers have carried out CCTV and witness enquiries in the area and are continuing their investigations."

Anyone with CCTV footage or information about the incident, should contact police with the reference 22000070158 via DM on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’.
