A man died and a toddler was critically injured in a collision involving a car in Barnsley, police said.

Officers are appealing for information and witnesses to the crash, which occurred in the Worsbrough area at about 11.40am on Sunday.

A blue VW Polo hit a wall and a pedestrian and a one-year-old boy. The pedestrian, a 56-year-old man, died at the scene on West Street and the boy was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, South Yorkshire police said. The boy remains in a critical condition in hospital, the force said on Monday.

The man’s family are being supported by specialist officers. The driver of the Volkswagen stopped at the scene and is assisting officers, the force added.

A South Yorkshire police spokesperson said: “We’re appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or access the force’s online portal.
