Man in Townsville Hospital after being critically injured by patient in dementia ward

Police are investigating an incident at the Townsville Hospital after a patient was critically injured by another patient.

Officers were called after a violent incident between two men in their 70s at the hospital's dementia ward yesterday afternoon.

A 75-year-old man sustained critical injuries during the incident and is now fighting for his life.

Police said both men had pre-existing medical conditions.

Townsville Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kieran Keyes confirmed the incident in a statement.

"A patient is currently in a critical condition following this incident," Mr Keyes said.

"I would like to reassure the community the safety of our patients, their families, and our staff remain our highest priority as we work to manage this situation."

He said support was being offered to the patients, families and staff involved.

"We are also continuing to work closely with the Queensland Police Service to assist them with their investigations," he said.

"As this is a police matter, I am unable to comment any further."

It's understood the incident happened at 4pm on Tuesday, but police said they weren't called until after 9pm.

A crime scene has been declared where the incident took place.

A police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing.

No charges have been laid.
