Man in hospital for over a month after being attacked by suspect who stole his jacket in Hackney

A man was left with serious injuries that kept him in hospital for over a month after a suspect stole his jacket before punching and kicking him.

The victim, a man in his fifties, saw someone stealing his jacket from his car outside his home in Britannia Walk, Hackney, after he refused to give him a lift at around 10.45pm on July 20 2023.

The suspect ran off wearing the item before returning, punching and kicking the victim, the Metropolitan Police said.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries including a fractured cheekbone and nose and lacerations to his eye.

Detectives launched an investigation and have now issued an image of a man they want to speak to.

Investigating officer DS Rhiannon Essam, Central East CID, said: “This incident was extremely distressing for the victim and left him with serious injuries that saw him hospitalised for more than a month.

“Extensive enquiries have been carried out following the attack including the examination of CCTV, forensic opportunities and speaking with multiple witnesses - however these enquiries have not been successful in identifying a suspect.

“We continue with our efforts to find the person responsible and are now asking the public to help us identify the man in this footage who we would like to speak to.”

Anyone who recognises this man or has any information should call the police on 101 or via ‘X’ @MetCC quoting CAD 8907/20JUL23. People can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
