Man in hospital after being slashed to face and back in knife attack in Elswick

A man remains in hospital after being found by police officers with slashes to his face and back last night (January 18).

Northumbria Police received reports of an assault on Gloucester Road, Elswick, Newcastle, at around 8.40pm yesterday, and discovered a man, aged 35, to have suffered non-life threatening injuries “consistent with having been caused by a bladed article”.

The man was rushed to hospital and is reported to be in a stable condition, and police believe all those involved were known to one another. It comes as police have also cordoned off an area in Sovereign Place.

“An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing to trace those involved. Officers believe all parties were known to each other,” said a spokeswoman for the force.

“An increased police presence remains in the area as officers carry out enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Northumbria Police via their website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20230118-0949.

It is the second stabbing in Elswick in three months, after 14-year-old Gordon Gault was tragically stabbed to death in November last year.
