Man in his 50s dies after ‘getting into difficulty’ in Grand Union canal

A man has died in hospital after being pulled from a canal in West Drayton.

The victim, in his 50s, was found by emergency services in the Grand Union Canal close to Chantry Close behind a large Tesco superstore at 10.30pm on Monday.

He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

A local resident said: “I saw several police officers taking turns to do CPR but it didn’t look like it had any effect. They really fought for his life.

“It was really terrifying watching that.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of a man in difficulty in the Grand Union Canal, near to Chantry Close in West Drayton.

“Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service. A man, aged in his 50s, was recovered from the water and taken to hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed.

“Officers will assist with preparing a request for the coroner.”
