Qld bomb victim 'may have been targeted'

A man seriously injured by a nail bomb south of Brisbane may have been the victim of a targeted attack, police say.

The 52-year-old suffered serious shrapnel wounds to his chest, abdominal region and limbs when the improvised device inside a bucket he was moving exploded in his front yard on Jacaranda Ave in Kingston, about 5.30pm on Thursday.

His injuries were so serious he needed treatment from QAS medical director Stephen Rashford and the High Acuity Response Unit before undergoing surgery in Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Nicola Brown says it is lucky the man did not suffer more significant injuries.

Officers have not yet been able to speak with him about the incident.

"We do believe that it could possibly be a targeted event," Sgt Brown told reporters on Friday.

She added that police do not believe there is any threat to the wider community, but urged residents to remain vigilant.

The man's partner was home at the time of the incident but was not injured by the explosion, while a nearby car and fence were damaged.

Sgt Brown denied reports from local residents that there had been multiple blasts, saying there was a single explosion.

Detectives are currently trying to work out how the bomb ended up at the victim's home before he found it and tried to shift it.

"It's believed he's located it within his dwelling, but as I said, we haven't actually had a chance to formally speak with him at this stage," Sgt Brown said.

The explosion occurred in broad daylight, and detectives are appealing for people who were in the area at the time or those with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

"It's of great concern to us that something like this has happened within our community," Sgt Brown said.

""If I can just appeal to anyone with any further information to come forward and let us know.

"Even if ... they think it's insignificant, especially dashcam footage."
