A man is in a critical condition after he was struck by lightning in Queensland's south-east.

Paramedics were called to an address in the Moreton Bay suburb of Brendale, north-west of Brisbane, around 2:30pm on Sunday.

Crews worked on the man at the scene of the lightning strike for close to an hour before he was taken to hospital.

Parts of south-east Queensland were battered by an intense thunderstorm, with severe thunderstorm warnings still in place for parts of the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay.

The Bureau of Meteorology said severe thunderstorms moved east from the Darling Downs, bringing heavy rain.

Senior meteorologist Harry Clark said parts of the south east received 44mm of rain on Sunday afternoon.

"Any thunderstorm has the potential to cause damage so I would encourage people to stay up to date with the warnings and the radar this afternoon," Mr Clark said.

Rainfall could increase as the system tracks east over the coming hours.

The storm risk is expected to decrease for Brisbane and Ipswich into Monday, with the risk of isolated rainfalls remaining.

The system is expected to move north on Monday, with regions from the Sunshine Coast north to Mackay expected to experience thunderstorms.

At the opposite end of the state, dozens of Burketown residents face an anxious wait to return home after severe flooding inundated much of the town.

Authorities say it could take weeks before heavy machinery can get to the area to help with clean-up efforts.
