Man hospitalised after falling into city centre waterway on New Year's Day

A man has been hospitalised after he fell into a city centre waterway on New Year’s Day.

Emergency crews were scrambled to the River Irwell near Water Street, just off Liverpool Road, shortly after 8pm on Sunday (January 1) evening. The man has been taken to hospital ‘as a precaution’, the Manchester Evening News has been told.

In all, police, fire, and ambulance crews attended the scene, near to Trinity Way for just under an hour, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said. They also confirmed specialist water rescue equipment was deployed to save the man.

“At 8.06pm on Sunday, 1 January 2023m two fire engines, a Water Incident Unit and Technical Response Unit responded to reports of a person in the water near Water Street, Manchester,” the GMFRS spokesperson said.

“Firefighters used specialist water rescue equipment to rescue one man from the River Irwell. The causality was checked by paramedics before being taken to hospital as a precaution. Crews were in attendance for approximately 50 minutes.”

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson added: “At around 8:10pm this evening, GMP officers received a concern for welfare of a man who had fallen into a canal in Manchester City Centre.

“Emergency services attended the scene and brought the man out of the water to safety. The man has been taken to hospital as a precaution and is not thought to have serious injuries.”
