Man 'hit on the head with firearm' during attack in East Belfast park

A man has been taken to hospital after being "hit on the head with a firearm" during an assault in an East Belfast park.

It has been reported that shortly before 8.45pm on Sunday, August 28, that a man had been attacked in a park by a group in the Holywood Road area of the city.

He was hit over the head with an object during the assault which is believed to have been a firearm.

The man, who is in his 40s, was taken to hospital after he sustained a number of head injuries, including a cut below his eye, a second cut to the top of his head and a third to the back of his head.

Detective Sergeant Dougherty said: "Police received a report of an assault shortly after 8.45pm yesterday, Sunday 28th August.

"Officers attended and located a male, aged in his 40s, with a number of head injuries, including a cut below his eye, a second cut to the top of his head and a third to the back of his head. He was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries.

"It was reported that a number of perpetrators hit him over the head with an object. We believe at this time the object was a firearm.

"Enquiries are continuing and detectives would urge anyone with any information to call them on 101 quoting reference number 1960 28/08/22.

"Information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. A report can also be made online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/."
