Man found sleeping in car on M1 hard shoulder more than four times over legal alcohol limit

A man found sleeping in a "seemingly abandoned" car on the M1 was almost "four and a half times" over the legal alcohol limit, the PSNI have said.

Officers from the Mahon Road Road Policing Unit in Portadown spotted the vehicle on the motorway before pulling to inspect it on July 13.

The man's roadside breathalyser gave a reading of 153 micrograms/100ml of breath - the legal alcohol limit in Northern Ireland is 35 micrograms/100ml of breath.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said: "Officers from Mahon Road RPU stopped with this seemingly abandoned vehicle on the hard shoulder of the M1 this morning.

"We found a male sleeping in the car with the engine running. As we suspected he had consumed alcohol, he was the subject of a preliminary breath test where he provided a reading at the roadside of 153, almost 4.5 times the legal limit of 35.

"The driver will now have a date in court for failing the evidential breath test at custody and driving without insurance."
