Startled by a man wielding nunchucks, Stafford Anthony Emmerson fatally shot a Queensland mother during an attempted robbery on a rural property south of Brisbane.
Emmerson has been found guilty of manslaughter after firing a sawn-off rifle into a shipping container home at Karawatha, killing 40-year-old Megan Kirley.
Emmerson, 43, arrived with a group of people in the early hours of February 9, 2019 in two cars to rob the residence and get "money for drugs", the Supreme Court heard.
Ms Kirley was in bed with her partner Pieter Pickering in the container home at the time.
Soon after their arrival, the group noticed the container home's only door was slightly ajar.
But when they tried to open it, Mr Pickering jumped out swinging wooden nunchucks.
Emmerson was given a bag containing the gun when they arrived at the property and had been pointing the weapon at the shipping container home's door.
"When Mr Pickering, to use the defendant's own words, jumped out he (Emmerson) says he was scared and fired the gun," crown prosecutor Dejana Kovac told the jury last week.
The group fled with Mr Pickering in pursuit.
He returned to find Ms Kirley crumpled over the side of the bed.
Mr Pickering began performing CPR but Ms Kirley was pronounced dead soon after paramedics arrived.
Ms Kirley died from wounds to her head and neck from a single bullet that had splintered.
Emmerson pleaded not guilty to murder at the trial before Justice Frances Williams.
A jury found him not guilty of the charge on Wednesday.
However, Emmerson was found guilty of manslaughter and will be sentenced on July 15.
He is the fifth person to appear in court following Ms Kirley's death.
Cameron Lindsay Witoko, Emma Louise Hinds - a mother of three and grandmother of a four-year-old - as well as Kobi Daniel Oram have each been sentenced to nine years' jail after all pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Geoffrey Dale Granz Glenn has also pleaded guilty to manslaughter but is yet to be sentenced.
