A man who was found dead in a house in Ipswich has been named by police as they launch a murder inquiry.

Suffolk Police said officers were called to an address in Hawthorn Drive, Ipswich, shortly before 6pm on January 1.

A 63-year-old man who was found dead within the property has been identified as William McNicholl, known as Billy, from Ipswich.

Suffolk Police said preliminary results from a Home Office post-mortem examination on Saturday indicate the cause of death as "being from multiple injuries", with the force's major investigation team leading a murder inquiry.

A police scene remains at the premises on Hawthorn Drive, near to the junction with Marigold Avenue, while inquiries continue.

Suffolk Police said an increased police presence "will remain while inquiries continue".

Police have appealed for anybody with information or who saw any suspicious activity near the address between December 24 and January 1 to contact police quoting reference 37/162/25.
