A man found dead at HMP Liverpool was checked on 20 minutes before he was discovered.
Anthony Paine, 35, of Stuart Road in Walton, was found unresponsive in his cell at HMP Liverpool on February 19, 2018. He was taken to Aintree Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Opening Mr Paine’s inquest today, December 2, coroner Anita Bhardwaj suspended the hearing until after criminal proceedings surrounding his death had come to an end.

She said: “Anthony was 35 and he was on hourly checks at HMP Liverpool due to various mental health issues, and he was checked at 2.40pm and he was safe and well. At 3pm prison officers attended his cell and he was found hanging in his cell. He was cut down, CPR commenced, paramedics attended and he was taken to Aintree Hospital where he was unable to recover and sadly died.
"A full investigation has taken place and two individuals have been charged with gross negligence manslaughter and failing to take care of the health and safety of Mr Paine.
"There's nothing for me to do other than suspend the inquest to await the outcome of the criminal investigation."
*Custodial manager Paul Fairhurst, of Belmont Drive in Chorley, and senior officer Rachel Jameson, of Middleton Drive in Prescot, have both been charged with gross negligence manslaughter, as well as failing to ensure that appropriate measures were considered and implemented to prevent harm under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
They appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court yesterday and are set to appear next at Liverpool Crown Court on January 5.
