Man found dead at home after flat fire

A man has died in a flat fire in Birkenhead.

Merseyside fire and rescue service were called to reports of a fire at Foxleigh Grange flats, on Townsend Street, at around 4.40pm on Sunday, March 19. At the scene, firefighters found a first floor flat well alight.

Crews from three fire engines tackled the flames and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property. They found a man inside the flat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire is believed to have been started accidentally by smoking materials. The man's next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson for Merseyside fire and rescue service said: "[We were] called to Townsend Street, Birkenhead, on Sunday 19th March. Crews were alerted at 4.40pm and on scene at 4.45pm.

"Three fire engines attended. On arrival crews found a first floor flat to be well alight. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

"Sadly, firefighters located the body of a 75 year old man inside the property. His next of kin have been informed. It is believed the fire started accidentally and was caused by smoker’s materials."
