He was taken to hospital where he today remains in a critical condition.

Police do not believe anyone else was involved in the fire.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 2.30am on Wednesday, we received a report of a vehicle fire on Blyth Road in Whitley Bay.

“Officers attended and a man, aged 46, was found to have suffered serious injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

“We do not believe there to be any third-party involvement in the incident.”

Yesterday the burnt out shell of the car was still visible from the road.

It has since been removed.
