Man fighting for his life after being struck by train at Lanarkshire station

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck by a train in Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to the railway line near Coatbridge Central station shortly after 7am this morning following reports of an incident on the line.

Paramedics attended and took a man to hospital , where he is said to be in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Services between Motherwell and Cumbernauld were affected for almost three hours while emergency workers attended to the casualty and made the scene safe.

In a Tweet alerting travellers to the incident, operator ScotRail said: "The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Cumbernauld and Motherwell, and services between these stations will be cancelled, delayed, or revised."

The line was cleared shortly before 10am.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We were called to the line near Coatbridge Central railway station at 7.07am this morning (April 11) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and a man has been taken to a local hospital.

"At this time his injuries are deemed life-threatening.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious."
