Man fighting for his life after being hit by car on pedestrian crossing near Headingley Cricket Ground

A young man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was hit by a car as he crossed the road near Headingly Cricket Ground.

The man, who is in his twenties, was hit by a black Vauxhall Corsa, as he used the pedestrian crossing on Kirkstall Lane, at around 10.55pm on Friday, February 17. West Yorkshire Police say he has suffered extensive life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Police are now appealing for anyone who saw the crash to contact them. The driver of the Corsa has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road traffic collision in Leeds in which a pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries. "The incident happened on Kirkstall Lane, close to Headingley cricket ground, at 10:55pm on February 17.

"A black Vauxhall Corsa was travelling along Kirkstall Lane, in the direction of Queenswood Drive and away from the Headingley area, when it was in collision with the male pedestrian who was crossing on a zebra crossing. The pedestrian, aged in his twenties, suffered extensive life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was taken to hospital.

"The driver of the Corsa has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or witnessed how the vehicle was being driven in the run-up to the collision, or anyone who may have video footage to call 101 or go online at https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat quoting reference 2110 of 17/2."
