Man 'felt sick' after finding 'alive and moving' cockroach in his KFC popcorn chicken box

A man "instantly felt sick" after claiming he found an "alive and moving" cockroach inside his KFC meal. Josh Hanbury claimed he found the disgusting sight in the popcorn chicken box he had bought during a trip to his local KFC restaurant in Newport last week.

Josh told WalesOnline he went to the restaurant on Spytty Road on the afternoon of Thursday, June 29, where he bought a Zinger Tower Meal, which includes a chicken burger, mini chicken burger, chips, popcorn chicken and a drink.

Tucking into his chips before moving onto the popcorn chicken, Josh said: "I put the last three pieces into my mouth and saw something moving in the bottom of the box. Then realised it was a cockroach. I instantly felt sick so didn’t want to finish the meal even though I paid £15 for it."

A revolted Josh claimed the creature in the box he'd been eating from moments earlier was "alive and moving. I was eating in the car park, so I walked straight back into the store and asked for a manager," he said.

"The manager was immediately apologetic but didn’t offer me a refund. I was quite frustrated [with] the fact he didn’t offer me [that]. Instead he gave me more food which I didn’t eat."

Josh said the creature inside the popcorn chicken box appeared to be 'alive and moving' (Josh Hanbury)

Josh said he had been to that branch of KFC recently without having had any issues, adding: "I hardly ever go to any KFC. That’s the first time it’s ever happened to me." Asked if the experience had put him off returning there, he said: "Yes, 100%. I’m never eating from there again."

A KFC spokesperson said the chain couldn't understand how the creature would have survived the cooking process and apologised to Mr Hanbury.

They said: "We must admit we were surprised by this image… Our chicken is freshly prepared, cooked at 365 degrees and served soon after so it'd be quite something to survive that," they said. "We have very strict hygiene and quality processes at our restaurants and the Newport restaurant has a 5 star EHO rating, but we’d love Josh to get in touch to fully understand how this happened so we can investigate and help make it right."
