Man faces child exploitation charges after allegedly planning to meet 12yo girl in Brisbane

A central Queensland man has been arrested after allegedly planning to fly to Brisbane to have sex with a 12-year-old girl.

Police alleged the 31-year-old from Clermont was chatting online with a person he believed to be the mother of the girl who was, in fact, an undercover police officer.

It was alleged that during the conversation last week, the man made plans to travel to the state's south-east and meet up with the girl.

A search warrant was executed on his accommodation in Dysart on Friday, where officers allegedly found a phone containing conversations between the man and the undercover officer.

Police then searched his home at Clermont on Saturday where they allegedly found a device containing child exploitation material.

One in four children approached online

Child Protection Unit Detective Senior Sergeant Emma Novosel said it was a reminder for parents to talk to their children about cyber safety.

"Research by the Commonwealth eSafety Commissioner has identified that one in four children have been approached by a stranger online," she said.

"It also shows that over 90 per cent of teens regularly use internet connected devices."

The man has been charged with using the internet to procure a child under the age of 16 and possessing child exploitation material.

He is expected to face the Mackay Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
