Man escapes from flat fire that prompted major emergency response

A man managed to escape from a blaze that broke out in a block of flats.

Emergency services rushed to Tennyson Avenue, in Bury, late last night (Saturday August 6) following reports of a fire in a first floor flat. A man has 'self-rescued' by the time that firefighters arrived, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed.

The fire prompted a major response and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were also in attendance. Crews spent just under an hour-and-a-half at the scene.

A GMFRS spokesman said: “At approximately 11.15pm on Saturday, 6 th August, firefighters were called to reports of a fire on Tennyson Avenue, in Bury. Fire engines from Bury, Whitefield and Broughton stations quickly attended the scene.

"The fire involved a first floor flat. One man self-rescued before firefighters arrived at the scene.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire. Fire crews were in attendance for around one hour and 25 minutes.”
