Police divers have found a body during a search for a fisherman who disappeared while trying to swim out to his untethered boat on Tasmania's Great Lake.
The 50-year-old Sheffield man was at Boundary Bay on the western side of the man-made lake when the incident occurred on Thursday.
Senior Sergeant John Parker from Tasmania Police said the man, whose name has not been released, had enjoyed a "successful morning fishing and had been preparing himself for lunch".
"He then realised his boat, which appeared to have not been tethered, has floated out into the lake," he said.
"The man has taken his clothes off, swum out to the boat some distance out, has reached the boat, and has been unable to get in … he then disappeared under the water.
"It's a beautiful day for fishing here, the man no doubt would have been having a great time. It's a tragedy."
Senior Sergeant Parker said a witness at the lake saw the event unfold.
He said the man's family had been notified.
The search for the man was suspended on Thursday night but resumed at first light on Friday and police said divers found a body about 11:40am AEDT "in the vicinity of Boundary Bay".
"While the man's body has not yet been formally identified, police believe the man is the 50-year-old Sheffield man reported missing yesterday," police said in a statement.
"Police would like to thank the local community for the support and assistance that was provided during the search effort.
"Our thoughts are with the man's family and loved ones at this difficult time."
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
