A man has died near East Midlands Airport after the car he was driving left the road and crashed into a fence.
At around 5.30am on Tuesday (March 8) morning, emergency services were called to the Hill Top end of the new Castle Donington bypass close to the airport and East Midlands Aeropark and Aviation Museum.
Leicestershire Police confirmed a crash had happened, and the driver was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police officers from the force dealt with what was described at first as a 'police incident', and part of the bypass was shut for several hours.
That road has since reopened.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: "We were called to Hill Top, in Castle Donington, shortly before 5.30am following a report a car had left the road and collided with a fence.
"It is believed the driver of the vehicle became unwell and he was pronounced dead at hospital."
"A file is being prepared for HM Coroner and identification will be a matter for the coroner."
The coroner will investigate the circumstances of the man's death, and a file is being prepared for HM Coroner's Office for Rutland And North Leicestershire.
It is not clear whether the man became ill prior to the collision, or shortly afterwards.
