A man has died while being restrained by police after crashing a car through a fence in Melbourne's north.

Victoria Police said it received reports a car had crashed through a fence and into the front yard of a premises on Murphy Street in Preston about 4am Sunday.

"Upon arrival, police observed the man inside the vehicle behaving erratically before he got out of the vehicle and confronted police," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"Officers attempted to restrain the agitated man before he appeared to become unresponsive.

"Attending officers immediately called for medical assistance and performed CPR on the man, however, he couldn't be revived."

The quiet suburban street, which houses a primary school, was blocked off by police well into Saturday.

Skid marks were visible along the bitumen and a hub cap was left laying on a footpath more than 100 metres away from where the car crashed.

A tree and multiple fences appeared to be damaged in the incident.
