A man has died after a fishing boat sunk just off the shore of a Scots harbour.
The fishing boat was being towed from the shore at Port William Harbour in Dumfries and Galloway when the vessel suddenly began listing and sunk into the sea at around 4.30pm on Saturday, November 19. Horrified onlookers told the Record one man was retrieved from the boat and carried ashore before being given CPR.
It's understood he was rushed to Galloway Community Hospital for treatment. However, it has now been confirmed he tragically died a short time later.
A shocked witness at the scene told the Record: "I couldn't believe what had just happened. The fishing boat was on the shore at the rocks at the mouth of Port William Harbour.
"Lifeboat teams was already on scene and a tow rope was eventually secured to the boat and Stranraer ILB - but just seconds after the tow began the fishing boat sunk.
"The person on the fishing boat went down with the boat but was recovered from the water and taken ashore with CPR being carried out and onshore until the ambulance arrived. He was still receiving CPR for around 35mins in the ambulance after being recovered from the water."
Officers say their enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a boat which got into difficulty and capsized near to Port William, Newton Stewart around 4.30pm on Saturday, November 19.
“A man was taken to Galloway Community Hospital where he died a short time later.
“Enquires are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."
