Man dies in horror Galway crash as gardai close road

A pedestrian has died in a collision involving a car in Galway.

It happened shortly before 6.30am this morning on the N84 at Carrowbrowne on the Headford Road.

The man, aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for a post-mortem.

Gardai say the driver of the car was taken to hospital for assessment only.

The road remains closed for a forensic collision investigation, with local diversions in place via the N84.

An appeal has been launched for witnesses to come forward.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in County Galway on Sunday the 19th February, 2023.

Shortly before 6:30am, Gardaí were alerted to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the N84 at Carrowbrowne on the Headford Road in Galway.

"The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway (UHG) where a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The driver of the car was taken to hospital for assessment only.

“The road at the crash site remains closed for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are currently in place on the N84.

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward. Road users with camera footage (including dash cam) who were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.”
