Man dies in crash with barrier on M1 between junction 20 and junction 21

A man has died after colliding with a barrier on the M1, police have confirmed. The man in his 20s, who was driving a red Nissan Micra, crashed whilst travelling on the northbound carriageway of the motorway – between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 for Leicester – at around 3.25pm on Wednesday, September 7.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both sides of the carriageway were closed while the incident was dealt with by emergency services and highway officials. Traffic on the southbound carriageway had been stopped so an air ambulance could land.

Traffic travelling northbound were forced to divert and the motorway fully reopened hours later. Detectives want to speak to anyone who may have seen the car before the collision.

And people with dash cam footage have been asked to come forward. DC Anna Thorpe, from the Leicestershire Police's serious collision investigation unit, said: “We have already spoken to a few people who saw the collision but I am keen to speak to anyone who saw the red Micra travelling along the M1 before the incident occurred.

“If you saw the vehicle or were travelling along that stretch of the M1 shortly before 3.25pm and have a dashcam, please take a look to see if you have captured anything that could be of use to our investigation.” Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 22*522013 or report online via www.leics.police.uk
